The lens is not chosen by technology alone.

During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is replaced by an artificial intraocular lens. Different lens designs balance focus, quality of vision and glasses dependence in different ways.

What matters in the decision

  • Retina and macular health.
  • Corneal shape, astigmatism and dry eye.
  • Biometry and lens calculation.
  • Reading, computer work, night driving and visual priorities.
  • Tolerance for optical tradeoffs such as halos or glare.

Monofocal, toric, EDOF and multifocal lenses can all be useful in the right context, but no lens is ideal for every eye.

The most advanced lens is not always the best option. Sometimes a simpler lens is safer and more predictable.

Practical summary

The best lens is the one that fits the eye and the patient’s routine, with honest discussion of benefits and limitations.
