First ophthalmology visit: how to prepare

What to bring to a first visit and how to prepare for questions about cataract or refractive surgery.

Need an individual evaluation?

The decision to operate or observe depends on your examination.

Schedule a visit

A good visit starts before the appointment.

Organized information helps the doctor understand your case, especially when the discussion involves cataract, refractive surgery or intraocular lenses.

What to bring

  • Previous eye exams and glasses prescriptions.
  • Your current glasses and contact lens information.
  • Medication list, allergies and relevant medical history.
  • Questions about risks, recovery, lens options and glasses expectations.

Will my pupils be dilated?

Often, yes. Dilation helps examine the lens, retina and inside of the eye. It can blur vision and increase light sensitivity for a few hours, so coming with a companion is helpful when possible.

A useful question is: “What in my case favors or argues against surgery?”

Practical summary

Bring exams, glasses, medication information and your questions. Be prepared for dilation and for an honest discussion of diagnosis, risks and next steps.
